It does seem like standard revivals tend to fail

The longest revivals are Chicago and cabaret, completely restaged. It will be interesting if the new version of les Miz works since the previous revival didn't. I believe pippin with the acrobatics and the tent is enough difference from the original. And the Doyle productions of Sweeney Todd and company worked.

You gotta have a gimmick and a faithful reproduction isn't a good gimmick.
