The Living Theatre celebrates its 67th season with the world premier of
NO PLACE TO HIDE
A new work-in-progress written and directed by Judith Malina
Performances March 19-29, Wednesday-Saturday, 8 p.m. at Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center (107 Suffolk Street).
New York, NY – The Living Theatre, the oldest experimental theatre group still producing in the United States, launches its 67th season with the world premiere of Judith Malina's NO PLACE TO HIDE at Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center on March 19. Judith Malina directs.
At a time when surveillance is a household topic, The Living Theatre's new production could not be more current. NO PLACE TO HIDE asks about the how, why, and what of hiding, and takes the audience on a journey through the untold history of New York. Challenging political, philosophical, and moral spheres of concealment, the play questions the boundaries between the private and the public while blurring our sense of intimacy.
NO PLACE TO HIDE looks at the reasons and consequences of hiding and invites the audience to explore alternatives together with the ensemble. The play about the human condition is presented in workshop format as a work-in-progress. This is the first production of the company after leaving their home of seven years on 21 Clinton St. Additional events presented by The Living Theatre at Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center are to be announced.
The ensemble includes Mariana Barcellos, Maximilian Baudisch, Brad Burgess, David Alexander Campbell, Canberk Cetin, Rita D'Almeida, Jay Dobkin, Miranda Ana Dobkin, Jody Doo, Leonie Ettinger, Caroline Gart, John Paul Harkins, Stefanie Harris, Lin Laurin, Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li, Cody Magouirk, Gülper Özdemir, Jen Pitt, Mary Round, Philip Santos Schaffer, and Thomas Scott Walker.
The creative team includes Michaelangelo DeSerio (Production Designer and Technical Director); Sam Peach (Music Composition and Accompaniment); Mark Costello (Projection Designer); Lin Laurin (Production Coordinator); Leonie Ettinger (Media Coordinator); Yi-Chung Chen (Assistant Lighting Designer); and Luba Lukova (Poster Designer). Assistant Director is Leah Bachar.
The Living Theatre was co-founded in 1947 by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. For more than six decades, the company has presented a unique body of work staging nearly a hundred productions and performing in nine languages in twenty- nine countries on five continents. Frequently opting for non-traditional venues, such as streets and prisons, it has greatly influenced other theatre companies, notably The Open Theatre (founded by Living Theatre member Joseph Chaikin) and Bread & Puppet Theatre. Its productions have won 3 Obie Awards: THE CONNECTION (1959); THE BRIG (1963), and FRANKENSTEIN (1968). Under Judith Malina's guidance and experience, The Living Theatre vigorously continues its ongoing research of innovative theatre forms involving audience participation and new methods of communication and social/political organization.

Judith Malina (Artistic Director) was born in 1926 in Kiel, Germany, and is the daughter of Rabbi Max Malina, one of the founders of the German Jewish Congregation in New York City. In 1947, after studying acting and directing at the Dramatic Workshop at The New School with Erwin Piscator, she and Julian Beck co- founded The Living Theatre as an artistic challenge to the commercial theater. Notable productions include THE CONNECTION, THE BRIG, FRANKENSTEIN, ANTIGONE, PARADISE NOW, SEVEN MEDITATIONS ON POLITICAL SADO- MASOCHISM, I AND I, RESISTENZA KORACH, and HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Her literary output includes the plays PARADISE NOW, MYSTERIES AND SMALLER PIECES, and THE LEGACY OF CAIN; collections of her diaries including "The Diaries of Judith Malina 1947-1957" and "The Enormous Despair"; and two books of poetry, "Poems of a Wandering Jewess" and "Love and Politics." As an actress, she has appeared in films including "Dog Day Afternoon," "China Girl," "The Addams Family," "Household Saints," "Enemies: A Love Story," "The Deli," and "Nothing Ever Happens"; and television series including "ER," "Miami Vice," "The Street" and "The Sopranos."
NO PLACE TO HIDE runs March 19 - 29 at Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center (107 Suffolk Street). Performances are Wednesday-Saturday at 8pm. Tickets are $20; $15 students/seniors; $10 for groups of more than 10. The show contains nudity and is appropriate for ages 17 and up.
