Why such long previews for Mothers and Sons?

Posted by: Guillaume 03:26 pm EDT 03/13/14

I didn't want to hijack the thread below but I keep wondering why a one set 90 minute play was given such a long preview period in front of an audience, especially when the play and actors appeared in a fully staged production fairly recently?

4 weeks of previews is fairly standard. Nothing much to be gained by abbreviating it. I don't know if McNally wanted to work on it more but that would also explain it. Late March is a better time to open than early March.

The first preview was Feb 23 and opening night is Mar 24. I don't think that's unusually long. All the Way's first preview was Feb 10 and opening night was Mar 6.

Also, the prior run was really short, only 14 total performances. That probably wasn't enough time to develop things fully.
