“AMERICAN BOYS”

A New Play By Chris Phillips

A Staged Reading
Monday, March 24th at 8:00 pm

There will be a Staged Reading of “American Boys” a new play by Chris Phillips on Monday, March 24th, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. at the Roy Arias Studios, Stage II; 300 W 43rd Street NYC.

Examining the gray area between condemnation and compassion, AMERICAN BOYS concludes Chris Phillips’s trilogy THE MONSTER CYCLE and takes an unflinching look at how we define genuine change in a country ruled by conflict. The cast includes: Matthew Drennan, Nina Millin, Clancy O'Connor, Travis Russ, and Dana Steer.

Disillusioned with the social norms of the gay community in West Hollywood, California, Los Angeles Public Defender Rory Dennis is trying to make changes in his life. But when closeted Congressman Adam Kane is found murdered, Rory is dragged back into the ring with his estranged friend and courtroom adversary, Assistant District Attorney Mary Hamilton, who zeroes in on Rory’s ex-boyfriend, hot-tempered reporter Nick Goff, as the prime suspect. With the revelation of Nick’s plot to out Kane and his recruiting of equally ambitious young journalist Alex Post in the politician’s downfall, Rory is forced to question everything he knew about a world that continues to shift under his feet.

Chris Phillips’ first play, REVOLVER, was first presented in a workshop as part of the CT Tuesdays program in the summer of 2010 at Celebration Theatre, and with only three performances, received a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Los Angeles Theater. His second play, ELYSIAN FIELDS, also developed at Celebration, was presented at the 2011 New York International Fringe Festival, winning a performance award for one of its ensemble. That same year, Chris was chosen as an award recipient by the Robert Chesley Foundation, which supports the work of LGBT playwrights.

Chris's third play, PIECES -- part one of the trilogy THE MONSTER CYCLE -- was presented for a workshop run in Los Angeles during the spring of 2012 before hitting the 2012 New York International Fringe Festival, staged at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre and winning the award for Overall Excellence in Playwriting. Following the festival, PIECES returned for the Fringe Encore series at New York’s SoHo Playhouse. In January of 2013, PIECES scored Chris's second GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Los Angeles Theater. Part two of THE MONSTER CYCLE, A CONSUMING FIRE, received a staged reading in both New York City and Los Angeles in the spring of 2013, and the following summer, REVOLVER was given its official world premiere as the final production of Celebration Theatre's 30th anniversary season. Phillips currently lives and writes in New York City.
