How's the best way to eat crow? Ticket prices

Posted by: dramedy 01:01 pm EDT 03/15/14

Ok, a family of four asked my help in picking a show for a 6 and 9 year old. They first wanted Chicago because the kids like the soundtrack, well, I steered them away from that. We narrowed it down to lion king or Aladdin. I got the dates and looked, I was shocked that lion king is still charging high prices for pretty bad seats. Basically against the wall are 137 a pnd the rest is 250. Aladdin was 200 for premium but a surprisingly low 105 for rear side orch (premium is six seats from aisle instead of 4), but I got row n center for 105 each which fit in their budget of 500. Father back is 90, so I assume those are partially obstructed due to mezz overhang. Although lion king probably would be better, Aladdin was chosen because of ticket price for good location. I'm going to enjoy my crow now.

Went to box office bought a rear orchestra last Wednesday night for $82. Had a great view of the stage and a fine evening. No service charges made a big difference to me. I did the lottery for If/Then and sat in the second row for $25. but that was pure luck.

Was the $82 ticket with a discount code? And how was the lottery seat for If/Then -- was it full view?

To whoever was doubting that ticket prices of different shows play into the choice of buying tickets... I say simply, SEE!

I don't recall anyone "doubting that ticket prices of different shows play into the choice of buying tickets." That is precisely the basis for producers' pricing strategies. But note what the pricing has done here: it has made a lower demand show (one that is seeking a market) more appealing to some buyers. That's exactly what you want to happen. But that has nothing to do with lowering the basic price of tickets to shows that are selling at higher prices, which is still an insane concept. Demand, meet price. Price, meet demand. It's really not that difficult a concept.

Dramedy was the one who said that, which is why he's eating crow.

Disney is the king of dynamic pricing. They are very savvy. I seem to remember Newsies having orchestra tickets for $99 in slow periods.
