I don't recall anyone "doubting that ticket prices of different shows play into the choice of buying tickets." That is precisely the basis for producers' pricing strategies. But note what the pricing has done here: it has made a lower demand show (one that is seeking a market) more appealing to some buyers. That's exactly what you want to happen. But that has nothing to do with lowering the basic price of tickets to shows that are selling at higher prices, which is still an insane concept. Demand, meet price. Price, meet demand. It's really not that difficult a concept.

I think Dramedy's observation highlights the problem with facile pricing arguments.

It is true that some folks are aware of, and research, prices. It is equally true that others are not and do not. Should a box office create equilibrium between the two?

People who walk into a box office without a discount are not shopping for price any more than people walking into a restaurant without a discount voucher are. Do you think those restaurants should cut their prices too?

I understand, from a consumer standpoint, why folks would want prices to be as low as possible with the least possible effort on their part. But I think we should also understand that, from a seller's standpoint, the goal is to gain the highest price for what's being sold without scaring off more buyers than we want. It's a game, and as the article about Disney makes clear, a highly sophisticated one. And yes it is based on greed, a concept that works in both directions in a market economy.
