Realistic Joneses

Posted by: jgs25 12:31 pm EDT 03/16/14

Downhill from the cute 'please turn off cell phones and NO PHOTOS'... not just us, it started as predicted by the NYT review of the Yale Rep production in 2012, but by the time it finished the whole audience had stopped laughing and was generally bored and glad to get out of there. Which was really difficult and people started yelling...so much for the beginning notice of the exits, etc...it was a packed house, and very frightening. The people sitting next to us were from Boston and were very disappointed also.

I didn't have a chance to read my program so I didn't know it was just one act. I was SO relived when the actors came out for their bows when the lights dimmed. Polite applause very briefly and everyone just wanted out. To say this show was a disappointment would be an understatement. What a waste of such a talented cast.

I'm a little confused by your post. Why were people yelling, and what do the exits have to do with anything? Was there a fire drill?

none of the exits were open, and they had made a big deal about where the exits were at the beginning std speech, and it was a bit scary...we're in the middle of a world crisis, if you remember. The Lyceum (sp?) is a huge theatre and they were packed.
The only time I was in a theatre with a fire, they announced it, but no one was sure it wasn't part of the play. But when Frank Langella got up from his seat and started to leave, everyone else did too. Eventually, we came back in from the street and the play continued, but a lot of people had left. It was in the old roundabout (?) on the east side of bdwy. A musical called ?????? It'll come to me, just like in last night's play.

No - the Lyceum is not a huge theatre by Broadway standards, but I agree that it is frustrating when some theatres, like the Lyceum, do not allow their orchestra side doors to be used for exiting patrons, and everyone has to crawl up the aisles to get to the lobby.

It can take a long time to exit the Lyceum because the orchestra aisles all lead to a somewhat narrow passageway between the last row orchestra and the lobby doors.

I notice that many theatres that do not have side doors that exit right onto the street do not permit exiting into the alleyways along the sides of the theatre.

But, still, no cause for yelling.
