Here's my issue with stuff like this: IF it is expected or traditional in the company, someone needs to be in charge of explaining that to new company members. I've heard of situations where a new actor joins a show and simply has no idea that this is even a thing. It's not like the dressers have a tip jar backstage somewhere. No one says anything, the rest of cast is discreet enough that the new person doesn't notice, and bad feelings are created for which the actor has no explanation.
