If/Then and Bullets POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Posted by: ARReith1982 04:28 pm EDT 03/17/14

I saw If/Then and Bullets over Broadway on Saturday. Here are my thoughts:

If/Then: This is NOT the new "Next to Normal." It doesn't even come close to the emotional impact nor artistic excellence. It's a good concept, but the storytelling is rough and very hard to follow. I honestly thought the show was a bit of a dud. To me, it played like a commercial for understanding destiny and choices. The two story lines don't really come together and, nor, is a true story built in the show. People will come to hear Idina Menzel (she is great!), but I predict it won't last much past her contract. Although, I could see Alice Ripley in her role. The two sub-plots weren't necessary either. I felt like the creative team had a good idea and missed the mark. Without the cast, this show would fold really quick.

Bullets Over Broadway: This was a LOT of fun!! They're clearly still ironing off the edges and finding what works and doesn't. My big complaint was that the show is too long. 2:45!! They need to shave off 15 minutes and they'll be golden. Susan Stroman does terrific work and should at least be Tony nominated. Zach Braff was great, Marin Mazzie was even greater, but I predicted that Helene York will win a Tony award this year!! Marin Mazzie very well could, too. Her entrance is fantastic, but the character sometimes falls a little flat. I will see this again. This show also needs an original score. Building the show around classics works, but they don't really propel the story forward. But, regardless, this is a hit and will do well during the awards season!
