I think this show is so good that I am quite surprised when I think about it that it is not revived even regionally very much. I would love to see it on Broadway. It's the kind of show that I would think would be a commercial hit: it is mainstream and entertaining in a broad way. I would invest my meager money in a revival.

As much as I love most of CITY OF ANGELS the "Hollywood" ending just kills for me.

I know the original creative team famously tried a number of different endings and couldn't get any to work and ended up just throwing up their hands putting in the current non-ending at the last moment due to time constraints.

And that's what it has always felt like to me...tacked on at the last moment for lack of anything better.

It's also a very tough show to keep in tip-top shape. After having enjoyed the original cast very much, I went back again to see the production with some replacements in the cast and a lot of the timing was off, and many laughs were gone.

I wish it were done more often (Stine is was of my dream roles), but I think most small theater companies are terrified of it (and probably rightly so). The tech (and costume budget) required to pull off the dual worlds is daunting. The music is incredibly difficult - you need kick-ass jazz musicians for your orchestra, and equally kick-ass singers used to close harmonies for the Angel City Four. It's glorious when done well, but so, so easy to screw up.

We should mount it, John Doyle style! That'll save money. J/k. You're right, but I wish it weren't so.
