I don't disagree with most of this article, but I always think it's important to point out that a lot of these film-Broadway projects were based on films that weren't hugely successful. The original film Newsies bombed. Once and Kinky Boots weren't really mainstream films that got a ton of attention. I don't believe Hairspray was a huge blockbuster in the movies either. I find it very questionable to say that the popularity of those films drive audience behavior.
