Unusual, absolutely. But certainly not unprecedented.

The Wild Party and Phantom of the Opera/Phantom come to mind off the top of my head.

Are there others?

I think The Wild Party and Phantom are both in the public domain, so there could be a million versions. Certainly DRS is not in the public domain yet. So there could only be a "new" adaptation with consent of the rights holder (which may or may not be the film studio).

Exactly. Look at how many musical (and non musical) versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL there are. Public domain is a completely different situation.

Not including works of Shakespeare, I bet A Christmas Carol probably has more adaptations than anything else.

Those are in a different category because the underlying source material was public domain.

(Sort of - Kopit & Yeston purchased the rights for Phantom, but the novel went PD before they got their show up, enabling Andrew Lloyd Webber et al to do theirs.)

You could include Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar in your list, sort of.
