I had no idea that wasn't the musical version of The Full Monty, but it makes sense.

The musical version of 'The Full Monty' played in London years ago - more successfully than the new version, which is closing (*very* early, it's only been running in London for about a month) at the end of next week.

It's a different situation than what the OP mentioned; one is a musical adaptation, one isn't. It would be unheard of for the rights holder to commission a second musical or second straight play based on it.

Which opened in London after the Broadway run with a new lyricist. Not sure how much of the score was new or just revamped.

Yes, that's what I meant. Though, I must say, I'm surprised that a non-musical stage version of THE FULL MONTY was licensed, especially so (relatively) soon after the musical version. I would imagine that might lead to some confusion.

It didn't seem to lead to any confusion here - the musical played London a decade ago, and I don't think it's had any major stagings in the UK since, and it's set in the States, whereas this is very definitely a stage adaptation of the film, set in Yorkshire (it was first staged at the Crucible in Sheffield, where the film is set, and was a big hit there). The musical, here, is more or less forgotten.

Fox owns the movie and invested in the musical, so I, too am surprised they would have licensed a different property, especially considering that it does get a decent number of regional productions.

I think you're ignoring that the musical is very, very Americanised, and that created a reasonable amount of resentment among English audiences. The straight-play version brings it back to something that is (or at least, was supposed to be) more attractive to a british audience (although clearly it's not working since it's closing early)

I'm not even sure it's fair to say it's not working for a *British* audience. It was extremely successful on tour, at least in the north. That doesn't always translate to success in the West End - and clearly hasn't in this case - but it clearly did connect with *some* British audiences.

"A Christmas Story" has a musical version and one, maybe two non-musical versions.
