Artistic Director Eric Schaefer is only staging one show next season. I wonder what else he has on his plate?

Bill, in San Diego

aside from what is mentioned, he also has running a theatre on his plate. I don't think ADs need to be encouraged to direct too many of their theatres' projects.

Schaefer is directing "Gigi", opening at the Kennedy Center in January 2015. Not sure what else he has planned (for himself).

Workload Question

I believe Kathleen Marshall has signed on for three shows next season with Broadway aspirations: Unsinkable Molly Brown (Denver Center, opening in September), Diner (Signature, December), Ever After (Paper Mill, May). Question for the experts here. Is it possible for a director to bring her "A" game to three prominent shows so close together? Doesn't someone need more than a few months between projects to really focus and do their best work? I look forward to your responses.

Both Diner and Ever After have been kicking around with Marshall for a while, so I'd imagine most of the pre-show work-concepts, designs, noodling with the text and score without an audience, et cetera-is largely squared away. The question was just finding a suitable berth for the two shows so that work could continue in earnest.

if they are all good, then no; if they are bad, then yes. post hoc ergo propter hoc. there is no right or wrong answer to your question; there are no rules. If you want to find something to criticize, then latch onto whatever suits you.

rodgers and hart put up 8 productions in 1925 alone (two editions of GARRICK GAITIES), one of which was DEAREST ENEMY

I am REALLY hoping for the best with this one, and hoping I get to see it someday either way.

But I have to say, and it's not that nice, that any new musical (not revival) that chose Kathleen Marshall to choreograph AND direct does not inspire confidence in me. Her competent, sometimes wonderful, sometimes ho-hum work on a career of almost entirely revivals doesn't make her seem like the prime candidate for a high profile new musical. But I'm happy to be surprised. (again, I've liked much of her work enough, so I'm not rooting for her to fail, just surprised by the choice)

I feel like I was too nice to justify what I said... what I mean is sometimes wonderful, too often ho-hum and mediocre, or even boring, work.

In any case, it'll be interesting to see how well Marshall manages something more contemporary. She's also doing Ever After at Paper Mill following Diner, I believe.
