Aladdin last night

Posted by: castro 07:17 am EDT 03/19/14

This is the most colorful show I've seen in years.
It is absolutely eye popping and will be the one to beat for costumes. It moves quickly and the performance of James Monroe Inglehart as the Genie is sure to get a Tony nomination and a possible win. As I was not
familiar with the film I couldn't comment on how well it was adapted, but it is well crafted and has great entertainment value. The magic carpet is indeed
magical. How do they do it?

Gentleman's Guide may well take book or score-a lot depends on the reviews for If/Then and Bullets (and rulings on Hedwig and Violet).

I think If/Then may win-it's an original musical (and Kitt and Yorkey are darlings of the theater now-my own distaste of the show notwithstanding)
Another possibility is "After Midnight" which, while a musical revue, has done decently this season and is critically acclaimed (Fosse, Smokey Joe's and Ain't Misbehaving all won and I view them as revues)

While I adored Iglehart's performance, I don't think the production was anything special (they'll be lucky to be nominated).

Also-The Lion King did win best musical. So this would be Disney's second best musical win if Aladdin ekes out a win.

I don't think bullets will qualify for book or score

Definitely not score. It seems like the book is the movie with some tweaks. So I don't think it will qualify.

The Bullets score, of course, won't qualify. But I don't think there's any question that the book will be eligible. There's no rule that I'm aware of that says that movie adaptations aren't eligible for the Best Book award. A Christmas Story and Kinky Boots were both nominated last year. And in prior years Sister Act, Shrek, Billy Elliot, Cry-Baby, Legally Blonde, and Grey Gardens all got nominations (and Billy Elliott won).

I guess they can't do a 50% rule for book

Nothing could be nominated some seasons with all these movie to stage shows.

certainly seems to be a revue & it also won, albeit in a very weak season. Its competition was Starmites & another revue, Black And Blue.

I saw it too, possible spoiler, Friend Like Me

In reply to: Aladdin last night - castro 07:17 am EDT 03/19/14

I didn't love it, but I liked it better than recent Disney offerings like Mermaid.

I thought the medley of other 90s Disney songs that was inserted into Friend Like Me, seemed really cheap and inauthentic. I know it's minor, but it bothered me a lot.

Also the tempo of A Whole New World seemed way quicker than I remembered it.

I also wasn't crazy about the many times they broke the fourth wall and the fact that there seemed to be this recurring mildly homophobic gag in which every time two men touched someone said something like "let's stop before this gets weird."

It's at times incredibly visually stunning, but other times really cheap looking.

Why do so many posters on ATC -- in this instance, you, castro -- find it impossible to write their reflections about a new Broadway production without immediately opining about how it will fare with Tony nominations?

Does anybody else find this utterly inane or is it just me?

Oops.

I think the interest in the Tony Awards is quite reasonable. Tony winners tend to take in more money and more prestige. (Just think of the press Bobby Lopez received for being an EGOT...awards do have impact.)

Awards don't always equate to "best" and there are plenty of examples of non-awardees that are among the greatest works (um...GYPSY, for one.) But I do think it is perfectly understandable for Tony Award speculation, particularly now when award season is right around the corner.

That said, while it's fun to speculate about "horse races", it should take nothing away from all the horses in the field. A thoroughbred is a fine horse no matter whether they win, place or show.

I think the reason that so many posters on ATC are obsessed with the Tonys is because so many posters here are American. Americans have a fetish for awards, contests, rankings, lists. You see it here pretty much daily in one manifestation or another.

Obviously, it is not a unanimous fetish-you and I may have been inoculated against it. (Or maybe you are Russian, as your name suggests, and not American at all.)

It is not just about Broadway ; it's every where. I just read an article about Spring Training: "ST games don't count," it said. They don't? Tell that to the kid who got cut because he struck out every time he got up to the plate.

I haven't seen every eligible show (and some aren't even in previews yet), but I can't imagine anyone beating Inglehart for the Tony as best featured actor in a musical.

In reply to: re: Aladdin last night - dlevy 09:18 am EDT 03/19/14

I think his chances are very good, but-

Jarrod Spector is quite good in Beautiful

Dule Hill is fronting a well-received revue and shows he can still dance in After Midnight

Violet hadn't started yet, but Joshua Henry has proven to have a wonderful voice and will be playing a role that saw nominations for its originator Michael McElroy off-Broadway

Anthony Rapp is making an impression on many in If/Then

Danny Burstein, nearly always terrific, has yet to start performances in Cabaret

...so I think that category is competitive and not a sure lock yet for anyone.

I thought Anthony Rapp was dull in If/Then. I'm predicting Inglehart will win based on what I've seen of him (I'm yet to see the actual show) and heard of him.

In reply to: re: Aladdin last night - ARReith1982 11:03 am EDT 03/19/14

I thought...many aspects of If/Then were dull, but that opinion seems pretty split amongst people I've talked with so I thought for the sake of illustrating it's a competitive year for featured actors I would include him. I would personally rather see James Snyder nominated from that show, and his song got the second best hand of the night when I saw it. But I wasn't sure if the producers would attempt to have him eligible for lead.

Inglehart does have to deal with living in the shadow of a very distinct and remembered vocal performance from the film, playing a part in a show that very much resembles the cartoon it is based upon, and is already showing some signs of being tired. I really blame that last one in no way on him, the choreography asks a LOT of him and there really should be another rest section built into the middle of Friend Like Me. He makes it through it, and the crowd loves him for it, but his vocals do suffer from what he would be capable of were he allowed to catch his breath more often.

I'm not surprised to see that Iglehart is getting so much Tony buzz as the Genie. (It was the flashiest role in the movie, too.) But Iglehart also wowed the crowds at ''Memphis,'' with his number, ''Big Love.'' And for a guy his size, he moves incredibly well, and even did a somersault. Iglehart's just a winning performer, and I'm glad he's getting his due.

I also hear great things about James Snyder as the boyfriend in ''If/Then'' and Nick Cordero as the hitman in ''Bullets.''

Cordero, Burstein and Iglehart seem like the three most likely contenders.

I'll see Cabaret on Friday.

That said, I would love for Iglehart to win. He was dynamite-I just couldn't stop watching him and he really had me and that audience in the palm of his hand.

James Snyder didn't do much for me (but then again, neither did the show). I didn't notice him. (Anthony Rapp was the male actor I noticed the most.)

It may be Burstein's year-but I'd sure love to see Iglehart end Disney's winless streak for acting Tonys-he really is incredible.

I haven't seen Aladdin yet either but I agree that Jarrod Spector's performance should not be overlooked. There were a lot of layers to his portrayal -- he makes a very complex character understandable and even sympathetic. I also was very impressed with Dule Hill in After Midnight.

I saw Aladdin last night as well. James Inglehart deserves the Tony (I've seen every single musical with the exceptions of Cabaret (yet to open) and Gentleman's Guide (seeing soon)).

What Inglehart does is absolutely incredible. His energy, stage presence and lovely voice (wow-he just filled that theater) is absolutely amazing.

What works against him is...it's Disney..and the production overall is meh.

I think Danny Burstein will pose the most threat to his winning. As much as I adore Burstein, James Inglehart made me, someone who typically hates Disney (with the exception of The Lion King), really enjoy his performance. He was 100% in character and in the moment the entire time. I think he totally deserves a nod and a win. (He is also a sweet guy-I've met him. This couldn't happen to a nicer guy if he wins.)
