Why do so many posters on ATC -- in this instance, you, castro -- find it impossible to write their reflections about a new Broadway production without immediately opining about how it will fare with Tony nominations?

Does anybody else find this utterly inane or is it just me?

I think the interest in the Tony Awards is quite reasonable. Tony winners tend to take in more money and more prestige. (Just think of the press Bobby Lopez received for being an EGOT...awards do have impact.)

Awards don't always equate to "best" and there are plenty of examples of non-awardees that are among the greatest works (um...GYPSY, for one.) But I do think it is perfectly understandable for Tony Award speculation, particularly now when award season is right around the corner.

That said, while it's fun to speculate about "horse races", it should take nothing away from all the horses in the field. A thoroughbred is a fine horse no matter whether they win, place or show.

I think the reason that so many posters on ATC are obsessed with the Tonys is because so many posters here are American. Americans have a fetish for awards, contests, rankings, lists. You see it here pretty much daily in one manifestation or another.

Obviously, it is not a unanimous fetish-you and I may have been inoculated against it. (Or maybe you are Russian, as your name suggests, and not American at all.)

It is not just about Broadway ; it's every where. I just read an article about Spring Training: "ST games don't count," it said. They don't? Tell that to the kid who got cut because he struck out every time he got up to the plate.
