Buying CDs... Amazon vs PS Classic site, etc

Posted by: Chazwaza 12:34 pm EDT 03/19/14

Does anyone know, does it benefit PS Classics in any significant way to buy from their site directly vs amazon? On Amazon I can get the CD cheaper and get free shipping...

(same question for Masterworks Broadway)

thanks

So this site gets some money. I try to do that whe I remember. Unfortunately, they don't have a link for broadwayoffers, which is where I buy most of my tickets.

You Get It Sooner from Manufacturer

If you order from PS Classsics or Ghostlight, you typically get the CD at least two weeks earlier than its on sale date at Amazon. Much better.

higher price plus unfree shipping plus no support for this website by clicking through to amazon...

whoever thought we'd live in a world where adding a middleman decreases the price.

The short answer is that the label benefits significantly if you buy from them, but a sale is a sale and it's better to buy the better deal than not buy at all.

The slightly longer answer is that it depends on a number of variables, including what sort of distribution agreement the label has, and there are other benefits to the label when you buy from a store like Amazon (including ensuring that those stores continue to stock that kind of product and protecting the label against having future product returns from the store - that's less of an issue with Amazon than it is for brick and mortar stores, but an issue nonetheless).

I don't think there's any question that the label gets more money from direct sales than they do through Amazon sales.

But I'm curious how much more. Like if they lose 10% to Amazon it's much different than 40%.

I want to support them, but even saving $4 per CD whether it's in price or shipping adds up very quickly, and I'm money is a concern for me.

I've never actually asked Tommy Krasker the question you are inquiring about but I do know two other guys who own prominent record labels in the soundtrack and/or cast album business. Both have told me that a sale is a sale, go for the best price you can find, the key thing is that they are moving inventory. They all realize that by using distributors like Amazon the profit is less per unit but they have to do it because Amazon's distribution reach is so great.

I was surprised to find Masterworks Broadway charges $4.98 per disc for shipping and handling regardless of how many items you order. I just ordered three CD's from them last week and they charged me a total of $14.94 to ship them standard mail. I must admit the order was shipped the next day but I still find it rather steep.

Per invoice:

Subtotal: $40.91
Shipping: $14.94
Tax: $0.00
Grand Total: $55.85
