OT: San Diego Opera announces that it is closing

Posted by: BillEadie 07:45 pm EDT 03/19/14

...after 49 seasons and always balancing its budget. The board concluded that costs were rising to a point where enough outside donations could not be found to keep the company afloat.

Bill, in San Diego

In the next decade. They rely to much on donations and most donors are dying off. Corporate probably do a far share of donations, but probably for the bigger companies in major cities.

Yep, it is a real cunumdrum for arts and other nonprofits: How to attract and sustain younger patrons and donors to be the benefactors for tomorrow?

The SF Opera's much publicized deficit a couple years back was largely the result of not receiving a couple large annual donations from older benefactors' families. The original donors had died and the younger trustees of the wealth decided not to donate as much as before.

Of course, two unions' contracts were coming up for negotiation. Friends at the Opera say the published deficit was some fudging to show the unions there is no cash for raises.

That's so sad, I'm sorry to hear it.

I fear that Sacramento Opera is heading the same way. They folded mid-season a few years ago, then came back after they reconfigured and combined with the Sac Symphony, and now all we get is one fully-staged opera a year when it used to be three. And the one opera we saw this year didn't have a set to speak of, just six chairs and a screen with projected scenery. :-( But I'm going to keep getting season tickets as long as they last!
