SFPlayhouse--Bauer--review

Posted by: dramedy 12:06 pm EDT 03/22/14

Finally, a well crafted play to enjoy! After a few weeks of horribly boring plays (Accidental Death, Yellow, Napoli!), i hit gold last night at SF Playhouse. Bauer, written by Lauren Gunderson (now i really wish i saw her theaterworks play Silent Sky), is a three person play with the feel of Copenhagen. Three very strong characters sparing on stage for 90 minutes. THe subject is the modern artist Bauer, his wife and currator of the Guggenheim that was his supporter and then something happened years ago. The mystery unfolds beautifully like a flower adding to the complexity of the story of their lives and who really is to blame or not blame.

The cast is very solid with Stacy Ross (very much like jodie foster) playing the curator, Ronald Guttman playing Bauer and his wife played by Susi Damilano.

Is this a masterpiece in the realm of T.Williams or A.Miller--no. but it is a very solid play worth seeing. And with one set and three characters and interesting story, I think it has very good potential of hitting ny in the near future. See this world premiere here.

Hm. I remain skeptical. I've seen a good deal of Gunderson's work, and I have to say, I don't understand how she gets produced. Silent Sky (TheatreWorks) and I & You (Marin Theatre Company) were pretty painful to sit thorough.

I loved Silent Sky, as did the friend who saw it with me, so I disagree with you on that one. I didn't see I and You, but I thought Bauer was quite good, though I didn't like it as much as Silent Sky (but I found the early astronomy historical background fascinating, while I am not a fan of modern art).

Just back from "Bauer" and I have to agree with dramedy. This is a damn good play and as dramedy said it has a solid cast. This is the playwright's best work and it should go to New York.

In fact it is going to New York in August at the 59 59th Street Theatre for six weeks. I think the playwright has a hit on her hands.
