Finally, a well crafted play to enjoy! After a few weeks of horribly boring plays (Accidental Death, Yellow, Napoli!), i hit gold last night at SF Playhouse. Bauer, written by Lauren Gunderson (now i really wish i saw her theaterworks play Silent Sky), is a three person play with the feel of Copenhagen. Three very strong characters sparing on stage for 90 minutes. THe subject is the modern artist Bauer, his wife and currator of the Guggenheim that was his supporter and then something happened years ago. The mystery unfolds beautifully like a flower adding to the complexity of the story of their lives and who really is to blame or not blame. The cast is very solid with Stacy Ross (very much like jodie foster) playing the curator, Ronald Guttman playing Bauer and his wife played by Susi Damilano. Is this a masterpiece in the realm of T.Williams or A.Miller--no. but it is a very solid play worth seeing. And with one set and three characters and interesting story, I think it has very good potential of hitting ny in the near future. See this world premiere here.
