Yep, it is a real cunumdrum for arts and other nonprofits: How to attract and sustain younger patrons and donors to be the benefactors for tomorrow?

The SF Opera's much publicized deficit a couple years back was largely the result of not receiving a couple large annual donations from older benefactors' families. The original donors had died and the younger trustees of the wealth decided not to donate as much as before.

Of course, two unions' contracts were coming up for negotiation. Friends at the Opera say the published deficit was some fudging to show the unions there is no cash for raises.
