The lineup features Jiří Kylián’s acclaimed Return to a Strange Land, set to four heart-rending pieces for solo piano by Czech composer Leoš Janáček. Set on six dancers, the piece combines elegant classical ballet and swiftly-changing geometric poses in a meditation on loss, healing, and hope, created as a tribute to Kylián’s mentor John Cranko. Return to a Strange Land received its Bay Area premiere with Smuin in October, which the San Francisco Chronicle called “moving” and “impressive,” and SF Classical Voice called “a must-see!” Smuin also brings back by popular demand the enchanting ballet Dear Miss Cline, a buoyant and colorful romp set to the music of Patsy Cline by Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert. Featuring ten Nashville tunes including “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Come On In,” “Triangle,” “There He Goes,” “Pick Me Up On Your Way Down,” and more, this high spirited and sentimental hit charms audiences with a rollicking trip through Cline’s country canon. The program will also include one of Michael Smuin’s most lauded works, Carmina Burana. Set to Carl Orff’s 1937 dramatic cantata of the same title, this iconic work from Smuin Ballet’s founder sets the heart soaring with a boisterous production that celebrates life, lust, and joy – and mourns the cruelty of fate. San Jose Repertory Theatre Presents World Premiere of Game On A Hilarious New Comedy Set in Silicon Valley by Dan Hoyle and Tony Taccone – San Jose Repertory Theatre has assembled a Bay Area “all-star” team for its world premiere of the hilarious comedy, Game On, which runs March 27 through April 19, 2014. Written by Dan Hoyle and Berkeley Rep’s Artistic Director Tony Taccone, and directed by San Jose Rep’s Producing Artistic Director Rick Lombardo, the uproarious and irreverent new comedy sizzles when Vinnie and Alvin played by local stars Marco Barricelli, co-artistic director of Santa Cruz Shakespeare, and Craig Marker set out to reverse their fortunes and save the environment in the process. Down-on-their luck buddies Vinnie and Alvin care about the environment – almost as much as they care about winning at fantasy baseball. Convinced that bugs are the “new protein” poised for sustainable, commodity farming, the two fast-talking sports fanatics set out to secure venture funding. Sure of their success, Vinnie and Alvin park themselves in front of a game during a swanky party in Los Altos that’s designed to raise funds for “green” projects. They just may be out of their league, though, as they try to close the biggest deal of their lives. Will their venture save the earth, make them rich, or will Vinnie and Alvin strike out in the ninth? A milestone of 20th century musical theater, The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) rolls on unstoppably into the 21st with absolute relevance in today’s world. In their opera “by and for beggars,” composer Kurt Weill (1900–1950) and playwright Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) created a trailblazing musical spectacle of fierce social and political critique, where the ‘haves’ clash with the ‘have-nots’ with its haunting jazz score by Kurt Weill, acid harmonies and biting lyrics. This musical saga of the villainous but irresistible Mack the Knife and his marauding band of thieves is a revolutionary musical theatre inspiring such hits as Cabaret (at The Stage in 2011 for an extended run) and Urinetown, The Musical (at The Stage in 2006 for an extended run). Gunderson’s play tells the compelling and controversial tale of world-renowned artist Rudolf Bauer, who was so driven to create, he sketched on scraps in a Nazi prison and yet eventually stopped painting forever when a feud erupted amongst himself, his patron and benefactor Solomon Guggenheim, and Bauer’s lifetime love, Baroness Hilla Rebay – one of Guggenheim’s most trusted curators. The Guggenheim Museum, originally built to house Bauer’s works, opened without a single Bauer exhibited. This January, San Francisco Playhouse’s commissioned play presents a freshly imagined face-off between Bauer and the two women he loved most as they each confront the passions of his life and art. Bill English directs a cast starring Ron Guttman* as Bauer, Susi Damilano as his wife and former maid, Louise, and Stacy Ross* as his lifelong love, Hilla Rebay. Bauer was also one of the originators of nonobjective painting, a genre commonly referred to as abstract or nonrepresentational art. Custom Made Theatre Explores Changing Gender Roles and Price of Success in Caryl Churchill’s "TOP GIRLS” It runs thru -April 13 Opening / P Custom Made Theatre has assembled a cast of dangerously funny women to romp through Caryl Churchill’s biting social satire, Top Girls, directed by Laura Lundy-Paine. The girls run amok at the Gough Street Playhouse, 1620 Gough Street in San Francisco, March 20 through April 13, 2014. Marlene has just been made president of Top Girls Employment Agency in London, beating out her more established male colleague and taking the agency by storm. She has achieved her dream to become successful and the top executive, but what now? A sumptuous dinner, of course, with wine, gourmet food, and five of the most famous and scandalously adventurous women in history: Adventurer Isabella Bird, Courtesan Lady Nijo, Dull Gret from Brueghel’s masterpiece, Pope Joan, and Patient Griselda from The Canterbury Tales. Shocking and hilarious, these six women take the restaurant by storm with stories of battles and high jinks, masquerading as men, passionate love-making, and beating their oppressors bloody.Churchill’s gift for rapid-fire exchanges, overlapping dialogue and fearless thrust of her subject matter are as breath-taking now as when the play premiered in the 80’s, as a scathing attack on the individualist nature of Margaret Thatcher’s England. As little has changed, Top Girls remains an essential, and ageless, look at changing gender roles and the price of success. The production run through April 12, . Performances are early: 7:00 pm on Thursdays, 7:30 on Fridays & Saturdays, and 5:00 pm Sundays. “Other People’s Money” is about corporate raiders and what seems to be the root of our financial problems,” said P.O.R.T. Producer John McMullen. “It won Best Off-Broadway Play for 1989, but it’s as relevant today. Coincidentally, TIME magazine featured Carl Icahn, the iconic corporate raider, on its cover in mid-December of last year. By the way, when it first performed in New York, Icahn attended and was quoted in his reaction to the play as saying, ‘Some of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard…many I find myself repeating.” CAST of OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY The cast is comprised of John Hale who plays Garfield, the obese, lecherous, gluttonous, avaricious, charming, and funny New Yorker who comes to buy, chop and sell the wire and cable mill that supports a small community which is owned by Jorgenson, played by Keith Jefferds. Karly Shea plays Kate, a sexy lawyer who battles Garfield at the behest of her mother, Jorgenson’s lover, played by Susannah Wood. Brett Mermer plays the company manager Cole, who is caught between the adversaries, and is concerned for his own future. All actors, except the new addition of Jefferds, were featured in the group’s inaugural production of “The Dining Room” at the Piedmont Center for the Arts in November and early December when the group was named Piedmont Avenue Repertory Theatre. The group changed its name to be more inclusive and because there was no venue to perform on Piedmont Ave. Tickets are $25, available at www.PiedmontOaklandRep.org or Brown Paper Tickets 800-838-3006 IT RUNS THRU APRIL 12TH The Marsh announces that LOVEBIRDS, a rollicking tale of incurable romantics from GLAAD award-winning solo theatre artist and comedian Marga Gomez, will extend at The Marsh San Francisco through April 12, continuing its current world premiere run (originally scheduled to close March 15). In seventeen scenes of psychoanalysis, flirtation, physical abuse and passion, He and She try to figure a way forward. To conclude each 'session', an envelope is exchanged. However much these people may scare, move you or make you laugh, the end…is something quite unexpected. In a unique twist, two casts of different generations will alternate performances, giving a compelling variance and nuance of interpretation to this new script.
