Biggest dubbing surprise?

Posted by: Greg_M 11:56 am EDT 03/28/14

A post on Jeremy Brett singing “The Merry widow” below triggered a question in my head. I didn’t know Jeremy Brett could sing since he was dubbed in “My Fair Lady” (I thought it was him until I read years later it wasn’t)

We all know by now that many actors in film musicals didn’t do their own singing. But many times we never knew.

The biggest surprise for me was Mark Lester in “Oliver!”
Of course I was very young when I first saw the film, but that also meant the film makers did a great job of matching the voice.

I first learned about dubbing and singing to a playback during a TV viewing of “My Fair Lady” when someone mentioned it wasn’t Audrey singing voice (I was ten) but then the song “Just You Wait” came on and I was confused (since that was mostly Audrey’s voice) because it sounded like her. The rest of the film not so much.

Of course even Robert Ebert was fooled by Peter O’Toole’s dubbing in “Man of La Mancha” even stating in his review “If there's anything worse than dubbing in the voice of a non-singer, its not dubbing the voice of a non-singer. What favor were they doing us when they let us hear Peter O'Toole sing”

Anyone want to share their surprise dubbing?
