I just checked, and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the English lyrics, is still alive, although very old at 88. I assume you're right about the lyrics not being able to be changed without his permission, but maybe the laws in the U.K. are a bit different when it comes to this sort of thing? It's also conceivable that Kretzmer approved the change in "On My Own," though that would be very surprising. Also, I suppose it's possible that Alain Boublil, as author of the original French lyrics, feels it's his prerogative to make changes in the English lyrics? Or...it is possible the lyric hasn't been officially changed at all, and that the performer in the current production of LES MISERABLES just keeps getting it wrong -- in at least three separate performances. As I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago, I heard Sally Murphy make the same mistake in the lyrics of "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" (she repeated one section) in two separate performances of the last FIDDLER revival.
