The man is now clearly leaving after having finished with Fantine, and is teased by the girls he passes at the door on his way out with "Did you wear your shows?" (giggle, snicker)

This leaves Fantine able to re-enter silently, and start with "Easy money..." I think it works/makes total sense in performance.
