Oh, I don't disagree that it worked fine before, and I wouldn't have felt any need to change it myself. I just meant that it plays in a way that makes sense in this production.

It doesn't give her a vocal build, but reassigning the lines make it so that Fantine is never ok with the act and never plays along. She takes a swig of something and walks off silently after "Come on deary, show 'em what you've got. Come on deary, let 'em have the lot," (another line reversed from the original) and then re-enters dead faced to walk forward though the group of laughing girls and teasing the captain. It's still clear enough to play for everyone involved. If anything, it simplifies Fantine's actions.
