It did not have to be too high. Chita Rivera sings it substantially lower on the OBCR.

Betty Wand used to do an act in which she sang many of the songs live that she'd dubbed in movies. She claimed Rita sang Anita's share of "America" and her solo verse in "Tonight", making no mention of Marni's bit at the end. Betty sang all of "A Boy Like That" and Anita's portion of "I Have A Love". That was it for her.

It's funny that Tucker sings the song as Riff and then sings Ice's two solo lines in the second half. Finding out about that when the DVD was released was my biggest dubbing surprise.
