Yeah... one can argue all one wants that it's Tom's story... though I really think it's Laura's as much as Tom's. But in the writing, in the way William's has Tom presenting these scenes to us, maybe the point is that the star of Tom's life has been his mother.

You can't blame every director who's ever directed the play for not bringing out that Tom is the one who should walk away with it... that's not how it's written. Tom isn't passive, but his movements are slower, more thoughtful, and his biggest action, leaving, takes the whole play of Amanda being the colorful star, to happen.

I mean... Kiss of the Spider Woman is Molina's story, but I'm willing to bet in most cases Aurora/Spider Woman walks off with the show no matter how good the actor playing Molina is. Maybe a bad example, maybe not.
