I've never seen a production like that. In the film versions, Amanda is very colorful and with the trimming and rewriting, she is clearly the star. But in the play, it is clearly Tom's story and how what he did and what he remembers of it mean to him. The opening and closing scenes are what it is about and those are all Tom's. The recent Broadway production as well as the superior Greg Mosher production at the Kennedy Center with the superb Sally Field and Jason Butler Harner did not let the actress playing Amanda walk away with the show and kept the focus on Tom's story. I saw Kiss of the Spiderwoman with Natascia Diaz, Hunter Foster and Will Chase and Chase as Valentin walked off with it though the other two had their moments. But the times I saw it with Chita, yes she was stunning and yet it was still Molina's story and Brent Carver and later Juan Chorian were not playing second fiddle to her but were at the center of the story.
