Violet first preview .....

Well, first to get this over with: started at 8:05 and ended 10 minutes to 10, no intermission. Saw it last summer at Encores!, and it was my first introduction to this show. What a beautiful story and terrific score. They have fleshed out the production a little bit, but still staged very simply (the bus seats are still movable chairs). Some of the cast is the same, some different. Sutton Foster, a sure Tony nominee again, shines as Violet, delivering such a poignant, heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting performance. I remember many of the reviews last summer said things like "the role she was born to do" or "it's like the show was written for her". And as clichéd as those words sound, they are so true. An unforgettable performance. The rest of the cast id top-notch, most notably Joshua Henry (I just love this guy), Alexander Gemignani as Violet's father and especially Emerson Steele as young Violet. Special kudos to Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley for their very special score and book. I highly recommend this show, terrific theater. Jim
