I finally caught up with The Tribute Artist, and I'm so glad I did. Charles Busch has created a zany, over-the-top, densely plotted comedy. I've read some negative comments about this play both here and on the other board, but I found it to be a delight. Busch and Julie Halston have their campy Lucy/Ethel routine down pat. Halston is very funny as is Mary Bacon. I love how Busch sprinkles his script with bon mots from old movies. He really is a very clever writer. The tone of this show is somewhere midway between The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Die Mommy Die. The Tribute Artist has Busch at his campy best, Halston as a lesbian real estate agent, a teen trans man, a sociopathic grifter who traffics human body parts, a long lost neurotic relative, a dead landlady and the fabulous West Village townhouse they all want - desperately. Breezy, entertaining and fun. I believe it closes this Sunday, but there's still a few more chances to see it.
