More perplexing, why is Lucy Liu announcing the nominations?

I don't usually watch the announcements, so I don't know how it's usually done, but this (yes, she was a replacement in God of Carnage for at the most 3 months) just reeks of "We are embarrassed that no theatre people are well known enough to do this."
