Terrific review - but some questions

Another articulate and even-handed review from the estimable jesse21. Thank you.

Question: You write that Kate and Lucas are old friends of Elizabeth. When I attended at the second NY preview (March 6), I believe the character of Kate, played by LaChanze, was not an old friend at all. Rather, she was a neighbor in the apartment building Elizabeth had just moved into. They had barely met when the story began.

Not a big deal - actually it would make more sense for Kate to be an old friend.

So do Kate and Lucas still meet each other for the first time in the park at the top of the show? Or, as old friends of Elizabeth, do they already know one another?
