James Snyder plays the part perfectly and the big emotional payoff at the conclusion of the show comes, in large part, from how the audience is made to feel about him. Rapp also does fine work. Snyder has matured in looks since CRY-BABY. Rapp still looks and acts a lot like the role he played in RENT. Perhaps that's what jesse21 was referring to.
