My wife and I also saw this in DC along with our daughter and it's interesting to note that the book is still as hard to follow as it was then. (My wife has a PhD, my daughter is in a PhD program, and we were all pretty much confused, they being a lot smarter than I am.) The word then is that cast members stage doored with audience members and kept asking them if they were able to follow the plot. They all KNEW it was an issue, and the assumption was that by the time it opened in NY there would be some significant re-writing. Seems like not so much. (The red/blue lighting was in place at the time, but it just didn't help that much, if at all.)

I agree with Jesse's review in pretty much every respect.
