In most cases, you're right, it would not be reasonable to expect an understudy to be prepared to go on at this juncture. The argument was that it might be more reasonable to expect so in this particular case, as opposed to other shows, because Cumming has played the same role many, many times in what I understand is basically the same production.

P.S. If it were not so logistically difficult, wouldn't it be amazing if Danny Burstein could understudy Cumming (and, obviously, the understudy for Danny's role would go on for him in that situation)? I'd love to see Danny as the Emcee; I don't know if he's ever played the part, but I guess I could do the research :-)
