Maybe he's thinking that Shirley MacLaine had very little rehearsal, and she became a star. So he's grabbing every opportunity to strut and fret his hour upon the stage. ;)

Really, countless understudies have gone on with very little rehearsal. As I posted here the other day, Rosalind Russell was out for several days starting with the second performance of Wonderful Town in New Haven. They canceled the second performance but understudy Patty Wilkes went on the next day and played two or three performances until Russell was well enough to come back.

And we all know what a big star Patty Wilkes became.

OK, so it doesn't always work out that way.
