Yes, I have to say my first instinct wouldn't be to assume that this understudy thought, "I really, really don't want to go on as the Emcee today, but I'm reluctant to say that so I'll do it anyway." I could sort of more easily see that for an understudying actor who was further along in their career, had an established career going, and therefore felt they had little to gain by doing this and more to lose. Whereas if this kid has ambition and a belief in his own talent, I would think he would see it (though certainly scary) more as his moment to grab the brass ring. Not only might this be his only chance to play the role, there's lots of attention on him because of the unusual canceled performance last night. If he were well-received, it could change his career trajectory, and life, for the better. Whether it's admirable belief in oneself or foolish naivete or bravado, I think a lot of young actors are less concerned with, "I'm not prepared enough to be good" and more with "I'm talented, and finally here's my shot to show the world!"

(This is entirely useless speculation on my part, I've never met this understudy.)
