RE "The response is as valid as anyone else's that makes the question about them personally": Whether it's a question of bad grammar or poor punctuation or both, I couldn't say. But that sentence makes no sense.

RE "Plenty of scholarship on American competitiveness. Google it if you are interested": I'm not interested, but apparently you're a scholar on the subject. As you've definitively stated: "It happens that Americans in particular love contests."
