Moonves over Broadway

I think we have to credit Les Moonves, the president and CEO of CBS, for its continued telecast on that network. Even if the Tonys don't garner the highest ratings, it's a class act that often garners a wealthier demographic (and Emmys).

Each year, there's a lot of handwringing about getting more viewers for the Tonys, but no matter who the host is (or presenters are), it's always gonna be a circumscribed audience. The vast, vast percentage of mainstream American viewers hasn't seen these Broadway shows, let alone heard of the nominees. They have no rooting interest in what wins or loses.

So I'm grateful to CBS for carrying the Tonys on a major network. I'd rather not see these awards relegated to cable.
