That's similar to what I've been saying. Robert is not written as a full human being. He's a rather vague character in so many ways, and yet at the end it seems as if he's the person for whom we're expected to feel most. Francesca has basically had a fulfilling life. It seems that he hasn't, but it's hard to feel much for him, even if the song he sings at the end is a good one, because he never seems a real person.

And I never really believed these two people love each other in a life-changing way. The development that might make me believe that never happens.

I agree, this is a show with many virtues, but some major stuff is missing.

I do have several friends who either like it a lot or really love it. And at the preview I attended, I heard a number of positive comments at intermission and as we were leaving.

I wonder if perhaps, even without major changes having been made since I saw it, it has somehow come together a bit better than when I saw it. It certainly speaks to some people. I wish I had been able to connect with it more strongly.
