I fully agree with you the character and situation have no relationship to life as we know it. But if that we're the issue, how so you explain the runaway success if the original book?

I think many people think the music sounds too opera-y. I've heard that from people, and if one isn't a fan of that kind if heightened singing, then the TV ads and word-of-mouth might be keeping large numbers if people away. Add to that the fact that the plot is a very interior one, there's little laughter in it, things like that...maybe this was always meant to be more of a chamber opera for Playwrights Horizons or something rather than a Broadway show for the masses?
