Every time I have had to do mandatory coat/bag check (usually because of onstage seating), it has been free of charge... It can be a hassle to have to do coat check, but I would be surprised if it involved an additional charge. Well, it's not free of charge at Sleep No More... but given the amount of movement required, they are quite right to ask patrons to remove their coats.
