I think part of the problem in getting people into the theater is that the novel may have sold a gazillion copies 20 years ago, but I imagine it's hardly sold anything recently. It's not a property that has become an enduring classic. And the novel generally got poor reviews, although the movie did better critically. To me, at least, the novel seems like part of another era, and not a property that speaks to contemporary audiences.
