I agree with your "annotation." It is a perfect example of allowing "rules" to overtake analysis to label narration as lazy. It can be, certainly, but so can expositional dialogue (in fact to my mind it is often worse). But it can also be perfect and smart and effective and valuable. You have to compare all these examples as well as Miller and Williams before giving it a disparaging look. (And in musicals, of course, would Fiddler be the same without it?
