I wasn't interested in seeing this because of the sappy reputation of the book and the movie. It was only the two leads and the TDF prices that finally drew me in. Due to the excellent score, the central performances and the effective design, I liked it far more than I expected to, but not well enough to say to most out of town visitors "this is the one show you should see".

The night I saw it I was surrounded by other women of a certain age, a few with their husbands but many just with their female friends (and this was a Saturday night). We got talking thanks to a shared reaction to an annoying couple who thankfully left at intermission. All of us were there on TDF and all were regular theatregoers from New York. The response at the end was very positive with a standing ovation - not easy to get from the locals. But I got the sense that these regular theatregoers of a certain age would, like me, only encourage people like themselves to go. They wouldn't be sending the irregular theatregoers down the street for their one big night out. Time was this core of theatregoers could sustain a modestly budgeted Broadway show but that's no longer the case.
