I'm confused what your ideal situation is here.

It seems to me that a "mainstream audience designed show" is precisely what they are doing. People love seeing recognizable stars, which is why presenters range from Broadway vets to people who are famous and have been on Broadway briefly.

They always incorporate musicals numbers from all nominated shows, plus in recent years additional musical numbers for hits or long running shows as well. There are a lot more performances that say, the Oscars. What additional performances would you hope for to represent the Broadway season? (The mainstream audiences, and even Broadway fans, are not going to be interested in seeing musical numbers from a flop).

But it seems like a lot of what Broadway "is" -- i.e., musicals like Motown, or shows starring tv/movie/music stars -- doesn't appeal to you and/or embarrass you. But that is what Broadway is, at least in part.

Your idea of what mainstream audiences like and what they actually like may be slightly different. If your friends want to see shows like Motown or shows that features stars, it might be worth taking note that that is what genuinely appeals to them.
