The Public Theater doesn't charge for the coat check

It's free. Just as it was at ''Spring Awakening'' for patrons who sat onstage. And ditto for the current ''Rocky.''

As others have noted, it's for safety. Actors (or patrons) might trip over the coats or bags during the performance.

And while $139 might be a record for Off-Broadway on weekends, there are $99 seats Mon.-Wed. ... When ''Here Lies Love'' played last summer, I paid full-price for repeat visits, and it was worth every penny. I only wish it were on Broadway, so it could be showered with Tony nominations for Ruthie Ann Miles, Jose Llana, Conrad Ricamora, David Byrne, Alex Timbers & Co.
