King Lear at TFANA

Posted by: stan 08:20 pm EDT 03/30/14

Michael Pennington is superb and is the principal reason for going. Except for Langella, I think I've seen them all going back to Olivier. Also Edgar was very good (Edmund was OK), I liked Rachel Pickup's Goneril (and also liked her in Dancing at Lughnasa), Gloucester and Regan were good, Kent was very good. The Fool was poor and I couldn't understand poor Cordelia (there's a slight speech problem, which didn't bother me when I saw Englert in Midsummer earlier this season, but made her incomprehensible in the second act today). A nice, moving, heart-felt production.

I read the Times write up on the production and it made me want to see it until I read that the Fool wasn't good. Such a missed opportunity the Fool-Lear moments are among my favorites in the play.

Sorry too that you only felt Edmund was OK. Such a delicious role.

I wanted to mention how good the storm scene was and, to shine my credentials, that my first Lear starred Morris Carnovsky. The show runs 3 hours 10 minutes with one intermission (almost 2 hours in).
