The character of Robert is sort of too good to be true, but for me that actually created a completely different problem. I understood completely why Francesca would be so passionate about Robert, but I couldn't understand what he saw in her.

Kelli O'Hara is giving a beautiful performance, but having also seen Elena Shaddow at Williamstown, I can say that for me this was a problem that didn't exist there. It's not that O'Hara's performance isn't as good, I think she's just not as well suited to the role (which is ironic, seeing as she's been basically the only unanimously praised element of the production).

For me, Shaddow's Francesca, with her olive complexion and wonderful Italian accent, seemed exotic and out of place in Iowa cornfields. But O'Hara, as wholesomely Midwestern as you can get, seemed totally in the right place. She also seemed to be playing the doomed ending throughout the entire show, whereas I found Shaddow to be sparkling and completely enchanting until she realized that this relationship had no feasible future. She made me believe that Robert, this entrancing man, would be as equally entranced by her.
